This plant grows well on rocky outcroppings and forested trails. It is a member of the mint family and like other salvia plants, it is hardy and drought tolerant.

 

Its bright red flowers are an attraction to butterflies and hummingbirds but not deer. It is popular for xeriscaping in Texas.
